How to Learn Magic

Magic is a massive part of the Sleepkin world. It's how they breed, how they live, and how they get by in day-to-day life. Every sleepkin has innate magic they can perfect in the way of colored magic, but they also have the ability to perform elemental magic if they take the time to learn!

Once your Sleepkins is an adult, there are two ways that mechanically your Sleepkin can learn magic!

Independently via Street Magic

Magic Classes via signing up when they come around!

Each way of learning has its pro's and cons, so make sure to think hard about how you may want your Sleepkin to learn their Magic! Once you've learned a rank of elemental magic one way, it can't be learned another way. This means if you learn Middle School Water independently, you'll only be able to learn High School Level Water Magic through class, not Middle School again! All Magic is submitted to the Learning Magic folder on the Deviantart so it can be approved!

Learning through class

Learning through Magic Classes is no doubt easier than learning independently, but it doesn't come around as often- nor is it as spacious! Let's take a look at some things involved in Magic Classes, how they work, and why they may (or may not!) be the choice for you!

In a Magic Class:

It takes place over the span of a month, with a new ability being learned each week. This means you'll only have to do a polished piece a week to keep up in class!
Middle School and Highschool classes are free however there is a limit of 20 Free Slots per class! Of course, you can use a Magic Course Ticket to enter if the free slots are all taken! Mister Flower has a lot on his plate, also helping run the Kindergarden, so he can't just do everything for free!
Magic Classes only take place every other month, meaning you'd have to wait for them to come around in order to enroll!
College Level Classes will require a Magic Course Ticket! These classes have no free slots, so you'll need to have a course ticket on hand in order to be signed up! This magic also cannot be learned independently, so if you're looking for College Magic, you'll be looking for Class!
This is the only way to learn Void or Purity magic! They're not available to learn independently due to their celestial nature.
Of course, if you don't complete your polished piece a week? You'll fail the class! You're allowed ONE Tardy each class, and no more!
Elementary Magics aren't required! So you can hope right into Middle School Water magic without ever having learned the Elementary Ability!

Learning INdependently

Now, if you have an adult Sleepkin, you've already done this! Elementary Magic is technically learned Independently, without an official class, and simply whenever you have the time! Now you may remember, you only had to do one polished piece for Elementary magic. Doing more high-ranking magic... isn't as easy.

When learning all by yourself...

Only Middle School and Highschool magic are available to learn via street magic! College Magics' more unpredictable and professional nature makes it quite literally impossible to learn safely on the street!
There is a Two (2) month Wait for Middle School and Highschool magic from the start date until you can submit it! However this isn't a time limit, in fact, there IS no time limit! You can take as long as you'd like to work on your independently learned magic.
Each level of Magic has a different amount of polished pieces you'll need to do! This means a lot but not too much drawing!
You can start whenever you like! As long as you have Pre-Requisite magics unlocked you can start!
Void and Purity are NOT available to learn this way! Those magics an only be learned via a class!

You may have noticed that each level of Magic will have different requirements when learning independently! So, let's look at said requirements!

Elementary

Require One (1) polished piece to learn! This Polished piece must depict your Sleepkin using the desired Elementary ability in the Kindergarden/Elementary Classroom with Miss Flower somewhere in the piece!
You can learn Elementary magic immediately once your Polished Piece has been accepted into the magic folder of the group!
You can learn all four elementary magic at once if you'd like, however, Naplings are limited to knowing only ONE until they grow up!

Middle School

Require Two (2) polished pieces of each Magical Ability at this level, meaning it'll require Eight (8) polished pieces in total!
There's a 2 Month wait after posting your first magic image until you can submit this magic for approval! Even if you have all eight pieces done in a month, you'll have to wait another month to get it all approved!
You must know the Elementary Ability relating to the Middle School magic you're trying to learn first! i.e. you need Elementary Water before you can learn Middle School water!

Highschool

Requires Four (4) polished pieces of each Magical Ability at this level, meaning it'll require Sixteen (16) polished pieces in total!
There's a 2 Month wait after posting your first magic image until you can submit this magic for approval! Even if you have all sixteen pieces done in a month, you'll have to wait another month to get it all approved!

If you're going the independent route, you'll also need to get the Magic approved over in #the-magic-masterlist channel on the Sleepkins Discord!

tattered ears and magical quirks

Now, you should know by now that Sleepkins Ear Rings are important to their performing magic, so what happens when they're damaged? Well, in story they may have issues performing magic, breeding, and more! In mechanics? There's no penalty at all! Your Sleepkin can still learn all the magics they want, although it's always fun to display them struggling!

You may also be wondering what happens to Naplings who were born with a Magical Quirk in a breeding, is there some bonus for that? There sure is!

The big thing that'll probably excite those looking to learn Independent is that babies born with a magical quirk have their Polished Piece requirement cut in Half!

Along with that, babies born with a complex magic quirk (like perhaps a Toxic or Psychic ability!) can learn that magics automatically without learning pre-requisite basic magics! Hooray!

Not to mention that if your Sleepkin happened to inherit a basic magic quirk, they know that Elementary Ability automatically once they grow up! No needs to complete that Elementary Magic for independent learning!

Of course, you can always choose in your personal stories to portray them as better or worse at their born ability! Sometimes, even if you're born with a magic, it's just not meant to be.
